Social Issue- protesting through artistic form Emma Stathers
SS9 Mr. Lewis
My social issue is on Civil rights. Civil rights are the rights of people for social freedom, political and equality. This can be enforced by an individual. Some examples or Civil Rights are: freedom of speech, the right to vote and many more. These are some issues that are still happening in our world today in places such as Afghanistan and other third world countries
The side I am on is, I think all people should have Civil Rights. I am on this side because people should have to right to have freedom of speech, vote and many other things. No matter what race, religion or country they come from or live in I think they should have rights.
I could protest my side by getting a small group ( or large group) of people holding signs saying things on how Civil Rights are a good thing all places should have them etc. Another way people could protest is by starting a riot. It could get very violent and it could work if there if enough people protesting for Civil Rights. Another way to protest is by signing by a petition.
The artist I chose for this Civil Rights project was Norman Rockwell. He was a 20th century painter/illustrator. The painting (The Problem We All Live With) is about racism, and how bad it really was. Looking at a photo of the painting you can see the thrown tomato, a word written on the wall of the building and US Marshalls protecting the girl, “Ruby” in the photo. I think this photo makes an impact if you know what to look for and also how you look at Racism and Civil Rights.
Using protest art is much better than violence because instead of everyone getting hurt why not just put up lots of Civil Rights posters and explains what it means. It may take longer just by using art instead of violence but at least no one gets hurt. It is also better than physical violence because more people would be willing to protest though art than violence, more people would be in the Civil Rights movement.
Self Reflection Protest art should be used more often because then no one gets hurt. And it could work better rather than fighting. I do believe that “Fighting” for the right cause or what you believe in. I think everyone should have civil right, it does not matter what race or age they are, everyone should have them. Other things such as legalization of marijuana should be through art protesting. I don’t believe it should be legalized.
